October in Fort Lauderdale

October is one of Fort Lauderdale’s quieter sweet spots. While much of the country is cooling down, here it stays warm and sunny, the summer crowds have thinned, and the winter high season hasn’t started — which usually means better availability and lower rates. It’s one of our favorite times of year at the nest, and here’s what to expect.

The weather

October brings warm days with highs in the low-to-mid 80s — warm enough to swim and boat, comfortable enough to walk, bike and explore. The ocean holds around 82°F, so snorkeling and paddleboarding are very much on. Early October still sees the odd passing shower, and it falls within the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs June through November; it’s worth watching the forecast and understanding your booking terms before you travel. Our hurricane-season post walks through how to plan around it without overthinking it.

Halloween and October events

The city gets into the season: trick-or-treating on Las Olas, haunted attractions and ghost tours, fall festivals, and Halloween-themed boat parades and water-taxi rides. There’s a mix of family-friendly and spooky, depending on your crew. October is also boat-show season — the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show is one of the largest in the world and takes over the waterfront for a long weekend, which is worth knowing about whether you want to go or want to avoid the traffic it brings.

Days on the water and easy day trips

With warm water and thinner crowds, October is a good month to get out on the water — a snorkel trip, a paddle, or a half-day fishing charter, all covered in the paddling and fishing guides. Lighter traffic also makes a day trip painless: the Miami day trip is under an hour south, and the Keys and Key West run is doable if you leave early. Save the hottest part of the afternoon for the pool and head back out when it cools.

The quiet sweet spot

October lands after the summer rush and before the holiday peak, which usually means better availability, lower rates, less traffic and easier reservations. The house sleeps ten and has a fire pit and grill for the occasional cooler evening, and the beach is about ten minutes away. It’s a good month for a group that wants the sun without the winter prices or the spring-break energy.

Plan the timing

If you have flexibility, the shoulder months on either side of summer tend to give you the most for your money; the best time to visit guide compares them month by month, and the cruise season and weather guide is useful if a sailing is part of the trip.
