Port Everglades sails all year, but it has a clear rhythm: a packed winter season when the weather is dry and warm and the full fleet is in, and a quieter, hotter, wetter summer. Knowing the pattern helps you pick when to sail and what to expect on the way to the ship.
The winter season
From about November to April, Fort Lauderdale is at its best — dry, sunny, and comfortably in the seventies and low eighties. This is when the most ships are based here, the widest choice of itineraries runs, and turnaround Saturdays are busiest at the port. It is also the priciest and most crowded time, and cruise fares and the house both book up around the holidays, Presidents' Day and spring break.
Summer and the shoulders
Late spring through early autumn is hotter and more humid, with a near-daily afternoon shower, and fewer ships based here than in winter — though plenty still sail. The shoulder months, roughly late October to early December and May, are the value windows: warm weather, thinner crowds, and lower prices on both fares and the stay.
Hurricane season
The Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, and it overlaps the cheaper summer sailings. In practice, cruises are among the more weather-resilient trips: ships can and do reroute around storms, and serious disruptions to a specific sailing are the exception rather than the rule. But if you sail in that window, build in flexibility — arrive a day early, and seriously consider travel insurance. Our best-time-to-visit guide has the month-by-month weather picture for the land side of the trip.
The best months to sail
For reliable weather and the fullest choice of ships, December through March is the classic answer. For value with still-lovely conditions, aim at November or April. If you are set on a summer cruise for the school holidays, go in with eyes open about heat, showers and the hurricane calendar — and, again, arrive early.
Packing for the season
Pack for the season you are sailing in: light, breathable clothes and strong sun protection year-round, a layer for cool winter evenings on deck, and a rain jacket in summer. The Atlantic here is swimmable all year — warm in summer and still mild in winter — so a swimsuit belongs in your bag whatever the month.
Planning the trip around it
Whenever you sail, the pre-cruise night is what protects you from weather and flight delays — see the pre-cruise stay guide. For which ships run when, see cruise lines from Port Everglades, and for the calmer alternative port, Fort Lauderdale vs Miami.
Questions people ask
When is cruise season in Fort Lauderdale?
Port Everglades sails year-round, but the peak season is November to April, when the weather is dry and warm and the most ships are based here. Summer is quieter, hotter and wetter, with fewer ships but still plenty of sailings. The shoulder months, late October to early December and May, offer good value.
What is the weather like in Fort Lauderdale for a cruise?
In winter (November to April) it is dry and sunny, typically in the seventies and low eighties — ideal for embarkation. Summer is hot and humid with near-daily afternoon showers. The ocean is swimmable all year, so the main seasonal difference is heat, rain and crowds rather than cold.
Is it safe to cruise from Fort Lauderdale during hurricane season?
Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30 and overlaps the cheaper summer sailings. Cruises are relatively weather-resilient — ships reroute around storms and serious disruption to a given sailing is uncommon — but you should arrive a day early and strongly consider travel insurance if you sail in that window.
What are the best months to cruise from Port Everglades?
December through March for the most reliable weather and the fullest choice of ships, or November and April for nearly the same conditions with lower prices and fewer crowds. Summer works for school-holiday timing if you accept the heat, showers and hurricane calendar.
Do cruises still sail from Fort Lauderdale in summer?
Yes. Fewer ships are based at Port Everglades in summer than in the winter peak, but sailings continue year-round, and summer often brings the lowest fares. Just plan for heat and afternoon showers on the land side and arrive early in case of weather delays.
