Most Fort Lauderdale “rainy days” are really rainy hours. From June to October the pattern is a hard afternoon shower that rolls through and clears by dinner, so the usual move is to plan the outdoor things for the morning and keep an indoor option in your back pocket. When the rain does settle in, the city has a good wet-weather day.
The two museums
The Museum of Discovery and Science downtown is the family default — hands-on exhibits and an IMAX — and the NSU Art Museum is the grown-up one, with a serious collection and changing shows. Either fills a rainy morning comfortably.
A historic house
Stranahan House, the oldest house in the city, is a short, dry indoor visit on the river, and the covered stretches of the Riverwalk nearby give you a walk between showers. Bonnet House has an indoor house tour too, though its gardens want dry weather.
A movie or a spa hour
For a low-key wet afternoon, a beachside cinema or a spa treatment are easy, dry options, and both suit the mood of a grey day better than forcing an outdoor plan. Save the sightseeing for when the sun is back.
Shopping, big and small
For a rainy afternoon with a group of different tastes, the malls do the job: the Galleria on Sunrise Boulevard is the close-in option, and Sawgrass Mills, about thirty minutes west, is one of the largest outlet malls in the country and an easy way to lose a wet afternoon. Las Olas has covered shopfronts for a smaller browse.
Eat and drink it out
A long lunch is a fine rainy-day plan. The Cuban spots and the brunch places are made for lingering, the county's breweries are good for an afternoon, and a waterfront table under cover lets you watch the storm pass over the water.
What not to do in a storm
One caution: South Florida's afternoon storms bring lightning, so a passing shower is fine to swim through but a thunderstorm is not — get out of the pool and off the beach when you hear thunder, and wait it out indoors. That is exactly when a museum, a long lunch or a browse through the mall earns its place in the day.
And often, just wait
The single best rainy-day tactic in South Florida is patience: swim in the morning, take an early indoor outing, and the sky is usually clear again by late afternoon. Our best-time-to-visit and weather guides explain the seasonal pattern so a forecast does not derail the trip.
Questions people ask
What is there to do in Fort Lauderdale when it rains?
The Museum of Discovery and Science and the NSU Art Museum are the top indoor picks, with the historic Stranahan House, the Galleria and Sawgrass Mills malls, the brewery scene and a long lunch as backups. Most rain here is a short afternoon shower, so an indoor morning often leaves a clear afternoon.
Does it rain a lot in Fort Lauderdale?
The wet season runs roughly June to October, when a hard afternoon shower most days is normal — but it usually passes within an hour and clears by evening. Winter (November to April) is dry and sunny. Even in summer, mornings are often clear, so plan outdoor time early.
What is the best indoor activity in Fort Lauderdale?
For families, the Museum of Discovery and Science with its hands-on exhibits and IMAX. For adults, the NSU Art Museum. Both fill a rainy morning, are a short drive from the house, and pair well with a long lunch afterward.
Is Sawgrass Mills worth it on a rainy day?
For a group looking to pass a wet afternoon, yes — it is one of the largest outlet malls in the country, about thirty minutes west of the house, and entirely indoors. The Galleria on Sunrise Boulevard is the closer, smaller option if you do not want the drive.
Will an afternoon shower ruin a beach or pool day?
Rarely. Summer showers are warm and brief, and the pool is fine to stay in through a passing one. The practical approach is to do beach and outdoor plans in the morning, keep an indoor option ready, and wait out the short storms rather than rebuilding the whole day.
