Fort Lauderdale is one of the great cruise cities. Port Everglades handled about 4.8 million cruise passenger movements in 2025, which makes it the third-busiest cruise homeport in the world, and it sits about fifteen minutes from the house. Arriving a day or two early turns a stressful travel day into the first day of the holiday — and for a group, it means a whole home instead of a row of hotel rooms.

Why arrive early

The cardinal rule of cruising is never to fly in on sailing day. A delayed flight can mean a missed ship, and the port does not wait. Coming in the day before — or two days before, if you want to actually see Fort Lauderdale — removes that risk entirely and lets you board rested. At the nest, plan on two nights: the house has a two-night minimum stay, so arrive two days before you sail or book the nights after you disembark. Since FLL is about fifteen minutes from the house and the port is about fifteen minutes the other way, breaking the trip here costs you almost nothing in transit.

Why a house beats a hotel for a group

Cruises are group trips, and the night before sets the tone. A whole house gives a family or a friend group one kitchen, one living room, a private pool and a fire pit, instead of scattering everyone across separate hotel rooms with a lobby in between. You cook or order in, swim, sort the luggage in one place, and leave for the ship together in the morning. See cruising as a group for the full case.

Getting to the ship

On sailing day the port is a short drive south. You can take a rideshare or taxi straight to your terminal, drive and park at the port, or arrange a car. The details — when to leave, the terminal drop-off, luggage — are in the last-mile guide, and parking is covered in the cruise parking guide. First find out which terminal your ship uses: our terminal guide explains the layout and why you should confirm it with your line.

The day before, done right

Keep it calm. A slow beach morning, lunch on the water and an afternoon swim is the ideal pre-cruise day — see the one-day plan. For dinner, the easy, close-in options are in where to eat near the port. Get your documents, medications and a change of clothes into a carry-on in case checked bags are slow to reach your cabin, and set an early night.

Which lines, and when

Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Princess and Holland America all home-port here, with Carnival, Disney and others rotating through — see cruise lines from Port Everglades. The season runs year-round but peaks from November to April; the cruise season and weather guide covers the best months and how hurricane season affects a sailing. And when you get back, the post-cruise day guide turns disembarkation morning into a bonus half-day before your flight.

Questions people ask

Should I arrive a day early before a cruise from Fort Lauderdale?

Yes. The firm rule of cruising is never to fly in on sailing day — a delay can mean a missed ship. Arriving the day before (or two days before to see the city) removes that risk and lets you board rested. FLL and Port Everglades are each about fifteen minutes from the house, so breaking the trip here is easy. At Turtle Nest Bungalow the minimum stay is two nights, so plan to arrive two days before you sail, or book the nights after you get back.

Is it better to stay in a house or a hotel before a cruise?

For a group or family, a house. You get one kitchen, one living room, a private pool and a single roof instead of separate hotel rooms, so you sort luggage in one place and leave for the ship together. It is usually cheaper per person than a block of rooms, too.

How far is Port Everglades from Turtle Nest Bungalow?

About fifteen minutes by car on a clear morning, a little longer on a busy winter Saturday when several large ships turn around at once. The airport is also about fifteen minutes from the house, so both ends of the cruise are short drives.

What should I do the day before my cruise?

Keep it calm: a slow beach morning, lunch on the water, an afternoon swim and an early night. Get your documents, medications and a change of clothes into a carry-on in case checked bags are slow to reach the cabin, and confirm which terminal your ship uses. See our one-day pre-cruise plan.

Which cruise lines sail from Fort Lauderdale?

Port Everglades is a home port for Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Princess and Holland America, with Carnival, Disney and others rotating through. Ships sail year-round, with the busiest season from November to April. See our cruise lines guide for where they go.

How early should a group leave the house on sailing day?

Aim to reach the terminal within your cruise line's boarding window, typically late morning to early afternoon, and leave the house with buffer for embarkation-day traffic near the port. For a group, allow extra time to load luggage and split between vehicles. See our last-mile guide for timing.
