New York to Fort Lauderdale is one of the busiest air routes to South Florida, and for good reason — it is the classic winter escape, and you can be on the sand the same afternoon you leave the cold behind. With three New York-area airports feeding a steady stream of nonstops, this is about as painless as a flight south gets. Here is how it works and how to reach the nest once you land.
The nonstop flight
The flight from the New York area to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International (FLL) runs about three hours nonstop — roughly three hours and five to fifteen minutes southbound, a little longer coming home against the wind. You have your pick of all three New York airports: John F. Kennedy (JFK), LaGuardia (LGA) and Newark (EWR). JetBlue, Delta and United all fly the route nonstop, and between them there are dozens of departures a day across the metro area, from early morning to late at night. That volume is your friend: fares stay competitive, and if a flight is delayed there is usually another one close behind.
Which New York airport to use
Pick the one closest to you and check all three when you shop — prices and times vary widely by the day. JetBlue has a large presence at JFK and flies FLL frequently; Delta serves the route from both JFK and LaGuardia; United's nonstops run from Newark, which is often easiest for travelers in New Jersey and the western suburbs. Because these are leisure-heavy flights, the cheapest seats tend to be mid-week and the priciest around holidays and the February and spring-break peaks.
Your nonstop options
All three New York airports fly FLL nonstop in about three hours — compare them on your dates, because fares and times swing widely.
| Departure airport | Nonstop airlines | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| John F. Kennedy (JFK) | JetBlue, Delta | The most nonstops; JetBlue's biggest New York base |
| LaGuardia (LGA) | Delta | Manhattan and Queens travelers |
| Newark (EWR) | United | New Jersey and the western suburbs |
From FLL to the nest
This is where Fort Lauderdale earns its keep. FLL is only about 15 minutes from the house, one of the shortest airport-to-door drives of any major Florida city — no hour-long slog from a distant airport. A rideshare or taxi straight from the terminal is quick and simple; if you plan to explore the beaches and take day trips, pick up a rental car at the airport instead. Our airport and Brightline guide has the on-the-ground details, and getting around covers the free shuttle, the water taxi and whether you need a car at all.
When to come
New Yorkers mostly come to trade winter for sun, and December through April is exactly when Fort Lauderdale is at its best — and busiest. If you have flexibility, November and May give you near-identical weather with thinner crowds and lower rates. See our best-time-to-visit guide for the month-by-month picture, and book early if you are traveling around Presidents' Day or spring break, when the New York flights fill first.
What to do first
Land, drop your bags, and you can be on the sand within the hour. For a first day, our complete guide to Fort Lauderdale lays out an easy plan built around the beach, Las Olas and the water taxi. If you have brought the whole crew, the nest sleeps ten around a private pool, with the main beach and Las Olas both a short drive away.
