Washington to Fort Lauderdale is a two-and-a-half-hour nonstop, short enough for a long weekend, and the capital region feeds it from three airports. Pick the one nearest you, because on this route the drive to the airport can take longer than the flight is worth arguing about.

The nonstop flight

Block times run about two and a half hours southbound and a little more coming home. All three Washington-area airports have scheduled nonstops as listed for September 2026: Reagan National on American, JetBlue and Southwest; Dulles on United and Frontier; Baltimore-Washington on Southwest, JetBlue and Frontier. Between them there are departures from early morning to evening most days, so a Friday-after-work flight and a Monday-morning return is a realistic plan.

Which Washington airport to use

All three fly FLL nonstop. Choose by where you live and who you fly.

AirportNonstop airlinesBest for
Reagan National (DCA)American, JetBlue, SouthwestThe District, Arlington and Alexandria; Metro to the terminal
Dulles (IAD)United, FrontierNorthern Virginia; United fliers; Silver Line Metro reaches the terminal
Baltimore-Washington (BWI)Southwest, JetBlue, FrontierMaryland and the northern suburbs; Southwest’s big base; MARC and Amtrak from the rail station

How to choose

National is the convenient one, a Metro ride from downtown and small enough to move through fast. Dulles is the long-haul airport and the United hub; it is a haul from the District, but the Silver Line Metro now runs to the terminal, and Frontier’s fares from there can be the lowest in the region. BWI is Southwest country, often the cheapest of the three, and easy for anyone north of the Beltway. The fare gap between the three on a given weekend is frequently bigger than the difference in drive time, so price all three before you decide.

From FLL to the nest

This is where Fort Lauderdale earns its keep. FLL sits about fifteen minutes from the house on an ordinary day, one of the shortest airport-to-door drives of any Florida city. A rideshare or taxi straight from the terminal is the simple option; if you plan to explore the beaches and take day trips, pick up a rental car at the airport instead. Our airport tips cover the terminals and the ride-app pickup, the airport and Brightline guide has the train and shuttle details, and getting around covers the water taxi and whether you need a car at all.

When to come

December through April is the classic season, when the weather at home is at its worst and Fort Lauderdale is dry, sunny and in the seventies. Fares and the house book up around the holidays, Presidents’ Day and spring break, so reserve those early. May, early June, and the stretch from late October into early December offer near-identical weather with thinner crowds and lower fares. Our best-time-to-visit guide has the month-by-month picture.

What to do first

Drop the bags, swim, and let the trip start. Then the beach is ten minutes east, Las Olas is a short drive for dinner, and the water taxi stop is a walk away for a first look at the canals. The complete guide to Fort Lauderdale lays out a first day, and the map pins every place we mention.
