Detroit to Fort Lauderdale is a three-hour nonstop from Detroit Metro on Delta, JetBlue or Frontier, the Michigan winter escape that trades lake-effect snow for a heated pool. Delta’s hub keeps the route well stocked with departures, and the two low-fare options keep it affordable.
The nonstop flight
Block time is about three hours southbound and a little more coming home. Delta flies the route from its Detroit hub with the most departures across the day; JetBlue and Frontier add nonstops of their own. All three are scheduled year-round as listed for September 2026, with the deepest schedules in the winter months when demand from Michigan peaks.
Airlines and terminals at DTW
Detroit Metro has two terminals that are not connected airside, so know which one you are leaving from.
| Airline | DTW terminal | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Delta | McNamara Terminal | The hub; the most FLL departures and the widest choice of times |
| JetBlue | North (Evans) Terminal | Roomier seats and free Wi-Fi; check the schedule by season |
| Frontier | North (Evans) Terminal | Lowest base fares; bags and seats are add-ons |
How to choose
If you want flexibility on times, Delta’s frequency wins. If you are traveling as a family or a group on a budget, Frontier’s base fares are hard to beat once you pack light, and JetBlue sits in between with more comfort. Whichever you pick, Detroit’s two terminals sit on opposite sides of the airfield, so the terminal on your boarding pass matters more than at most airports.
From FLL to the nest
This is where Fort Lauderdale earns its keep. FLL sits about fifteen minutes from the house on an ordinary day, one of the shortest airport-to-door drives of any Florida city. A rideshare or taxi straight from the terminal is the simple option; if you plan to explore the beaches and take day trips, pick up a rental car at the airport instead. Our airport tips cover the terminals and the ride-app pickup, the airport and Brightline guide has the train and shuttle details, and getting around covers the water taxi and whether you need a car at all.
When to come
December through April is the classic season, when the weather at home is at its worst and Fort Lauderdale is dry, sunny and in the seventies. Fares and the house book up around the holidays, Presidents’ Day and spring break, so reserve those early. May, early June, and the stretch from late October into early December offer near-identical weather with thinner crowds and lower fares. Our best-time-to-visit guide has the month-by-month picture.
What to do first
Drop the bags, swim, and let the trip start. Then the beach is ten minutes east, Las Olas is a short drive for dinner, and the water taxi stop is a walk away for a first look at the canals. The complete guide to Fort Lauderdale lays out a first day, and the map pins every place we mention.
