Minneapolis to Fort Lauderdale is a three-and-three-quarter-hour nonstop on Delta year-round, with hometown carrier Sun Country adding seasonal flights in the winter. For Minnesotans it is the shortest route to a warm ocean, and the house is fifteen minutes from the gate.
The nonstop flight
Block time is about three hours forty-five minutes southbound and a little more coming home. Delta lists the route year-round from its Minneapolis hub as of September 2026; Sun Country flies it seasonally, with the winter schedule the one to check. Minneapolis is an hour behind Fort Lauderdale.
Airlines and terminals at MSP
MSP’s two terminals are on opposite sides of the airport and are not connected airside.
| Airline | MSP terminal | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Delta | Terminal 1 (Lindbergh) | The hub; the most departures and the widest choice of times |
| Sun Country | Terminal 2 (Humphrey) | Seasonal winter nonstops; low base fares with add-ons |
How to choose
Delta is the default for frequency and for rebooking when a January storm hits the Twin Cities. Sun Country is worth a look for a set winter trip when its schedule is running, and its Terminal 2 is the quicker building to move through. Because the two terminals are separate, double-check which one your airline uses before you head to the airport; the light rail stops at both.
From FLL to the nest
This is where Fort Lauderdale earns its keep. FLL sits about fifteen minutes from the house on an ordinary day, one of the shortest airport-to-door drives of any Florida city. A rideshare or taxi straight from the terminal is the simple option; if you plan to explore the beaches and take day trips, pick up a rental car at the airport instead. Our airport tips cover the terminals and the ride-app pickup, the airport and Brightline guide has the train and shuttle details, and getting around covers the water taxi and whether you need a car at all.
When to come
December through April is the classic season, when the weather at home is at its worst and Fort Lauderdale is dry, sunny and in the seventies. Fares and the house book up around the holidays, Presidents’ Day and spring break, so reserve those early. May, early June, and the stretch from late October into early December offer near-identical weather with thinner crowds and lower fares. Our best-time-to-visit guide has the month-by-month picture.
What to do first
Drop the bags, swim, and let the trip start. Then the beach is ten minutes east, Las Olas is a short drive for dinner, and the water taxi stop is a walk away for a first look at the canals. The complete guide to Fort Lauderdale lays out a first day, and the map pins every place we mention.
